Dr. Brown is a dedicated healthcare professional and a proud native of Santa Rosa, New Mexico. He graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and completed his residency in the UNM Family Medicine Program. Since beginning his practice in Santa Rosa in 1993, Dr. Brown has devoted over 32 years to providing high-quality medical care to the community.
In 1999, Dr. Brown founded Sunrise Medical Group, a pioneering healthcare organization that significantly expanded access to healthcare services throughout Northeast New Mexico. His commitment to education and mentorship is evident in his role as an Adjunct Professor for Rural Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, where he has guided and mentored over 80 Family Medicine residents, helping to shape the next generation of healthcare providers.
In 2020, in a move to further enhance healthcare access in his community, Dr. Brown donated his practice to Sunrise Clinics, a not-for-profit organization. He currently serves as the CEO of Sunrise Clinics, where he continues to advocate for and implement strategies to improve patient care in Northeast New Mexico.
Dr. Brown’s extensive experience and dedication to rural medicine make him a vital leader in the healthcare landscape of his community, committed to ensuring that quality medical care is accessible to all residents of Northeast New Mexico.
Johanna Georgilas, MBA-HC, BSN, RN
Chief Operating Officer
Johanna Georgilas is an accomplished healthcare executive with over 25 years of experience in clinical operations, strategic planning, and organizational growth. Currently serving as the Chief of Staff and COO at Sunrise Clinics, Johanna leads operational strategies to enhance clinic performance and patient care in New Mexico. Previously, she was Vice President of Remote Physiologic Monitoring at Rhythm Management Group, where she developed scalable business models and operational processes to rapidly implement new programs, boosting efficiency and collaboration across clinical and administrative teams.
Johanna’s experience spans diverse healthcare environments. As EVP of Operations and Chief Clinical Officer at AMC Health, she spearheaded patient care delivery, clinical quality, and the design of innovative health programs, collaborating across departments to streamline client onboarding and service delivery. In prior roles at athenahealth and Philips Healthcare, she led clinical quality initiatives and developed telehealth and e-learning programs to support advanced healthcare models. Her background includes managing clinical software implementations at MEDITECH, and she has extensive hands-on experience as a pediatric nurse in acute and home care settings.
Known for her collaborative leadership and expertise in quality management, Johanna combines deep clinical knowledge with a results-driven approach to operational excellence, making her a key player in advancing healthcare delivery and enhancing patient outcomes.
In her free time, Johanna enjoys being with her husband, two sons, and two dogs, and she has a passion for cooking, baking, traveling, hiking, cycling and crafting.
Danica Gonzales
Chief Financial Officer
Danica joined Sunrise Clinics in June 2023 as the Comptroller and currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer. She began her academic journey at Luna Community College, where she earned her Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts. Following this, she took on the role of Community Development Director for Santa Rosa, New Mexico. In this capacity, Danica was responsible for preparing grant applications, managing grant funds, and ensuring compliance with grant requirements and reporting. She effectively collaborated with internal departments, external agencies, and stakeholders to align community development efforts, organized public meetings and workshops, and facilitated the review of development proposals to ensure compliance with zoning ordinances.
Driven to expand her expertise, Danica pursued a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. This educational background, combined with her experience as Community Development Director, equipped her for her subsequent role as an Assurance Associate with CLA, a prominent financial services firm. In this position, she audited complex areas and transactions, prepared financial statements, conducted analytical reviews of financial accounts, and trained interns to foster their professional development while assisting with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the company.
Danica brings a wealth of experience in business operations, grant management, finance, accounting, and audit processes to her role at Sunrise Clinics, where she is committed to advancing the organization’s financial health and sustainability.
Alex Phillips, MD
Medical Director
In addition to seeing patients in our Santa Rosa and Las Vegas clinics, Dr. Phillips is our Medical Director.
Originally from Georgia, Dr. Phillips attended the University of Georgia - Medical College of Georgia Partnership in Athens for medical school and then came to New Mexico for residency at the University of New Mexico. Dr. Phillips has numerous academic publications ranging from medical anthropology to epidemiology to clinical case reports. In addition to being Sunrise Clinics’ Medical Director, Dr. Phillips is affiliated with Guadalupe County Hospital, Guadalupe County EMS, and Guadalupe County Correctional Facility.
Dr. Phillips practices full-spectrum rural medicine and has a special interest in outpatient procedures and dermatology. Outside of work Dr. Phillips enjoys spending time with his wife Lydia, daughter Blythe, and son Peter, as well as getting outdoors in beautiful New Mexico.
Deanna Sandoval, LPN
Director of Nursing and Clinics
Deanna is the Director of Nursing and Clinics at Sunrise Clinics in Las Vegas, NM, where she has been providing strategic leadership and direction to nursing and medical assistant staff since 2023. With a strong commitment to compliance with regulatory standards and best practices, she has successfully implemented policies and mentored her team to promote professional growth and enhance patient care.
Prior to her current role, Deanna served as a Family Medicine Nurse and Office Lead at Sunrise Clinics from 2018 to 2023. In this capacity, she provided direct patient care, managed chronic care, coordinated administrative activities, and served as a liaison between office staff and management.
Deanna's clinical experience also includes working as a floor nurse, skilled nurse, and admissions nurse at Vida Encantada Nursing and Rehabilitation. There, she provided compassionate care to long-term patients, implemented nursing processes, and communicated effectively with healthcare providers to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
She holds an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing and a Licensed Practical Nurse Certificate from Luna Community College. Deanna is proficient in EMR systems, wound care management, and effective communication, all essential skills for thriving in fast-paced healthcare environments. She is a licensed practical nurse with a multistate compact license, reflecting her dedication to providing quality care.
In her free time, Deanna enjoys spending time with her husband and their three beautiful babies.
